It’s all so easy when you’re young and then the real world hits and you realize, holy shit I have to fit in my workouts, resist the desserts in the office all day, and cook at night. Whyyyy?
Let’s be real with each other — staying fit and healthy when you’re busy is hard. But we can’t (and shouldn’t) neglect our health just because we’re busy. Arguably when we’re busy and stressed, that’s the most important time to focus on our health. Working out releases endorphins and endorphins make you happy (and happy people just don’t kill their husbands) and it relieves stress.
7 ways to stay healthy when you’re busy:
Kickstart your day with a solid breakfast
Get your metabolism going and fuel your body for the day with a killer breakfast. Eating breakfast helps your concentration throughout the day, lowers cholesterol, and reduces hunger during the day. For the breakfast of champions, work some lean protein in to help you feel full until lunch. Try a veggie omelet or a smoothie chocked full of veggies, fruit, and greek yogurt (bonus points for some protein powder in there).
Pack your lunch (and snacks!)
This is huge for all us busy ladies. It’s challenging to eat lunch out — nothing worse than watching your coworkers chow down pasta while trying to find something decently healthy to eat. Pack yourself a nice balanced lunch the night before so you’re ready to grab-and-go in the morning. Also pack tons of healthy snacks; the more the better! Keep yourself nice and full throughout the day so you have the willpower to say no to the office doughnuts. A few of my favorites are baby carrots, mini peppers, almonds, celery + peanut butter, grapes, homemade trail mix, and any other prepped veggies you can think of.
Schedule your workouts like you would a meeting
You wouldn’t blow off a business meeting so why should you blow off your workout?! I know how hard it is, I really do, and I don’t have all the answers. I’ve found it easiest to workout in the morning or straight after work. Don’t let yourself get home because then you won’t want to go — straight from the office to the gym. I’m also a big fan of YouTube workouts. Don’t judge me, there are tons of great free full length videos on there! And you don’t have to think about anything, just do what they tell you. Two of my favorites are Fitness Blender and POPSUGAR Fitness.
Bring a water bottle with you everywhere
Everywhere might be a little bit of an exaggeration but as many places as you can. You should drink at least half an ounce of water for every pound you weigh, ideally a full ounce. So if you weigh 150 pounds, you should drink between 75 and 150 ounces of water every day. It sounds like a lot but if you get a nice big water bottle, pound a few of those and you’re good to go!
Prep healthy snacks
Pick a day of the week and get your food prep on. I’m honestly not a huge fan of prepping meals for the whole week, after the second or third day I either get tired of what I made or get a little snobby about three day old food (sorry not sorry). But snacks are a different story. Cut up all your veggies, portion out everything you can into ziplock bags and containers, and prep easy to grab snacks for your fridge.
Get busy with your Crockpot
Crockpots are amazing. Throw everything in there in the morning and when you get home, it’s ready. How beautiful is that! I find almost all my recipes on Pinterest. Just search Crockpot recipe and you will open the floodgates.
Eight hours might be a stretch but aim for at least seven. Your body will thank you. A good nights sleep helps you maintain a healthy weight, a clear head, and better immunity. Lack of sleep is linked to a long list of serious health problems and decreased sex drive (who wants that).
Staying healthy when you’re busy can be hard, there’s no denying it. But if you follow these tips, it will be a little easier. Remember you’re only human and you’re going to slip up. That’s okay! Just do the best you can and remember it’s about being healthy. What do you guys do to stay fit when you’re busy? Always welcoming new tips!
